Used as activators for peroxide compounds in oxidation, washing, cleaning or disinfectant solutions are transition metal complexes of the formula (I) in which M is manganese, cobalt, copper, iron or ruthenium, Y is an alkylene, alkenylene, phenylene or cycloalkylene radical, which, in addition to the substituent X, may be possibly alkyl and/or aryl-substituted, with a total of 1 to 12 C atoms, where inside Y the shortest distance between the N atoms complexing with M is 1 to 5 C atoms, X is hydrogen, -OR3, -NO2, -F, -Cl, -Br or -J, R1, R2 and R3 are mutually independently hydrogen or an alkyl radical with 1 to 4 C atoms, Z1 and Z2 are mutually independently hydrogen or an electron displacing substituent, especially -CO2Me, -SO3Me or -NO2, Me is hydrogen or an alkaline metal like lithium, sodium or potassium and A is either absent or is a charge-equalising anion ligand. Washing and cleaning agents preferably contain 0.0025 to 0.25 wt.% of such activator complexes.
