The invention relates to a method for the production of an electronic index suitable for rapid pattern searches, by means of a data bank containing a database, whereby the electronic index is produced by means of the electronic data bank and index objects thus formed are grouped in classes, each comprising a representative, namely an index object of the corresponding class and transformation maps from a number of permissible transformation maps, the members of which (transformation maps) transform the selected representative into index objects of the database of the corresponding class only.
