A computer system for facilitating literacy teaching includes a phoneme-grapheme correspondence store which stores relationships between phonemes and graphemes in a chosen language. The system also includes a word store and means for associating entries in the phoneme-grapheme correspondence store with entries in the word store. A query engine can compile subsets of words corresponding to one or more specified phoneme-grapheme correspondences. This allows a teacher using the system, or a system linked to the embodying system, to extract lists of words which may be suitable for teaching certain phoneme-grapheme relationships. A useful tool for teaching the relationship between written and spoken words is thereby provided.
