The invention relates to a method of classification and recognition of patterns which has the following steps: provision of a pattern, to be classified and to be recognised, of a m-dimensional object, said object to be classified and to be recognised being in the form of a m-dimensional polygon outline; determination of a property for each point of the polygon outline, said property being defined in such a manner that it clearly reflects the relationship between each point and its preceding point and its following point on the polygon outline; connection of the properties for each point of the polygon outline in such a manner that an overall property clearly characterising the polygon outline is obtained; smoothing of the polygon outline to form a new polygon outline; (k-1)-fold repetition of the steps of determination of the property, connection of the properties and smoothing of the polygon course; production of a signature for the pattern using the k-obtained overall properties; and comparison of the signature of the pattern with signatures of known patterns to establish a degree of parity between the compared signatures.
