Error diffusion with sub-pixel modulation for gray scale rendering of continous tone images

In an error diffuser for rendering images defined by digital pixel samples, the improvement comprising of a detector for identifying highlight regions of said images and decision logic for outputting pixels of relatively short on-time duration for the printing of said highlight regions, on pixels of longer duration and off pixels for rendering other portions of said image.
