A mobile auxiliary communicaitons facility for use with a satellite-equipped communications link and a gateway hub (106). The satellite-based communications link is adapted to provide one or more Internet communicaiotn pathways between a first (107) and second (109) location. The mobile auxiliary communications facility (110) includes a utilization mechanism for utilizing the IP communicaiton pathways to implement one or more bi-directional telephonic communication links and one or more bi-directional data links between the first and the second location.
