Self-assembled lamellar silica-surfactant mesophase composites have been prepared with crystal-like ordering in the silica frameworks using a variety of cationic surfactant species under hydrothermal conditions (T100 °C). The crystallization of the silica is shown to result from local interactions between organic surfactants and inorganic silica. The rates of formation of the locally-ordered silica structures is shown to depend on the composition, charge density, and symmetry of charged surfactant head groups. More importantly, different charged surfactant head groups favor the formation of different local arrangements within the molecularly ordered inorganic framework and could prove valuable for tailoring the local organization of inorganic architectures of a variety of materials.
