Method of fast synchronoisation of block encoders and block decoders using block coded, bidirectional data transmission via a bit oriented channel

The method involves both communications devices adopting an asynchronous state at the start of a data transmission, each transmitting a first flag to the other and each synchronizing to the first received flag and/or to further flags. When either device has successful synchronized the other continues to transmit flags until it no longer receives flags and hence both devices have achieved synchronization, whereupon data transmission commences.
