A stator has an axis and a central opening extending in an axial direction for the accommodation of a rotor (2) by the formation of an essentially annular rotor-stator gap (7). It has several radial recesses (5) located on the periphery of the central opening which extend in an axial direction at least partly over the length of the central opening. The stator is designed so that a part or all of these radial recesses form axial supply and discharge channels for a cooling medium. Seen in the peripheral direction on one or both sides of at least one supply channel, a discharge channel is located directly beside this. This supply channel can be acted upon separately from the discharge channel by coolant medium for the generation of a cooling medium flow in the rotor/stator gap from the supply channel to the discharge channel.
