A soil analysis instrument has a carriage coupled to a pad associated with a probe having a lobe for analyzing rocks contained in the lobe. The carriage and pad move across a surface in a given direction at a given speed (V). The distance between the carriage and the pad (D) is a function of a dimension (L) of the lobe, the speed and the resolution time (T) of the lobe. The functions may be D - L and D - V x T. The carriage moves in the given direction during a first period equal to L/V and moves in an opposite direction for a shorter period. The carriage may be hauled by a cable within an oil well and the pad is a shoe sliding along the well wall parallel to the well axis.
