An apparatus (90) for reaming the medial portion medullary canal in the calcar region (62) of a long bone. The apparatus includes:a flexible shaft (92) having a first end and a second end;a smooth distal head (91) fixedly attached to said first end of said flexible shaft;a reamer (93) fixedly attached to said second end of said flexible shaft;a solid shaft (94) having a first end fixedly attached to said reamer (93) and a second end having a connector (96) for connection to a rotary power transmission source, andmeans (95) disposed proximally from said cylindrical reamer and spaced between said first and second ends of said solid shaft (94) for guiding the apparatus within a hollow member (73) of a template (80).
