According to the invention, 4-chlorobiphenyl is produced in a particularly advantageous manner by reacting biphenyl and chlorine in the presence of core chlorinating catalysts and by subjecting the resulting reaction mixture to a fractional distillation. As a result, 4-chlorobiphenyl can be obtained which contains 0.001 to 10 ‰ of 3-chlorobiphenyl and which is considered novel with this specification.
