METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR ENCODING IMAGES IN CONSIDERATION OF PERCEPTUAL COLOR TOLERANCE

PURPOSE: A method and a system for encoding images in consideration of perceptual color tolerance are provided to improve encoding efficiency without deterioration in picture quality. CONSTITUTION: A PCT(Perceptual Color Tolerance) value with respect to each of pixels of the original image is determined, and color tolerance of the PCT value is compared with color tolerance of pixels surrounding each pixel to obtain image complexity(O). The PCT value is increased when the image complexity is high and the value is decreased when the complexity is low(C). When the error between the original image and a predictive image is defined as a predictive error image, the predictive error image is compensated using the predictive error image and a predetermined perceptual error image. The PCT value is applied to the compensated predictive error image to generate a perceptual predictive error image having reduced amount of generation of errors, and the difference between the compensated predictive error image and the perceptual predictive error image is obtained to generate the perceptual error image. The perceptual predictive error image is encoded through an encoding procedure including DCT and quantization.
