PURPOSE: A method of channel assignment and decoding of a viterbi decoder is provided to process three channels simultaneously using two viterbi decoder cores, thereby increasing decoder efficiency and reducing electric consumption and size of the viterbi decoder. CONSTITUTION: Two viterbi decoder cores are provided wherein a synchronous channel, a paging channel and a supplemental traffic channel are assigned to a first viterbi decoder core, and a common control channel, a dedicated control channel and a fundamental traffic channel are assigned to a second viterbi decoder core. Data from the assigned channels are decoded in the two decoder cores such that data of the paging channel and common control channel being simultaneously processed, and the data, sound and image of the dedicated control channel are simultaneously processed.
