PURPOSE: A shared systolic array apparatus for tracking hierarchical motion in a video coder is provided to use the same structure for each hierarchy when a motion is tracked using a hierarchical tracking method. CONSTITUTION: A shared systolic array apparatus for tracking hierarchical motion in a video coder includes a reference area memory(10) for storing data of a reference area, a tracking area memory(20) for storing data of a tracking area, and a systolic array(30) for receiving the data stored in the reference area memory and the tracking area memory to divide a block to be tracked into partial blocks to allow various hierarchies to share the same systolic array, thereby performing hierarchical motion tracking. The apparatus further has an accumulator(60) for accumulating the outputs of the systolic array, and a minimum vector detector(70) for detecting a minimum vector from the output of the accumulator.
