The present invention provides an antimicrobial agent which can be produced in large quantities at a low cost and which has a high antibacterial effect, using a natural material having no problem in human body ingestion as a raw material. This antimicrobial agent is prepared by using a shell shell powder of a humpback shell as a raw material and firing the shell shell powder at an ultimate temperature of 700 to 2500C in an inert gas atmosphere.
