PURPOSE: An object-based video coding method is provided to improve the performance of a coder in MPEG-4 video verification model. CONSTITUTION: Texture coding is performed using correlation maximizing extrapolation. Shape coding is carried out through a contour encoding technique using two-step motion compensation. Motion compensation is executed using transmission rate restricting hierarchical grid interpolation. A video object plane coding unit of a verification model coder to which an object-based video coding is applied includes a motion estimation unit(12), a motion compensation unit(14), a texture coding unit(16), a shape coding unit(10), and a previous reconstructed VOP detection unit(19).
