The present invention is directed to methods and systems for use in treating patients taking certain medicines to prevent side effects on the medicament and optimize treatment. The system uses a surrogate marker or indicator that includes the blood concentration of the drug to determine the patient's next required dose. Since the substitute drug label is used as a rate of change of state, any indicator can actually be used. Substitute drug labels may include any measure of the efficacy of the drug action. Given the efficacy of this pharmacological action on the substitute drug label, changes in the drug dose are produced by the system. Conversely, the use of such a system can determine the expected outcome of a change in drug dosage based on the substitution drug label.
