The method and apparatus of the present invention separately estimates the signal amplitude and noise of a symbol encoded using a received signal, in particular a turbo code. However, the method and apparatus may be applied to such estimations such as power control radio systems (CDMA systems), other associated coding schemes, and the like. The method and apparatus first estimate the signal and noise of the received signal individually using curve fitting techniques. Therefore, more detailed estimation is possible by using the amplitude of the received pilot symbol or using the noise estimate of the received pilot symbol.
