PURPOSE: Provided is an yttrium aluminate yellow phosphor, containing thulium, for a white light emitting diode, which is excellent in light emitting brightness under the excitation of blue light source generated from a blue light emitting diode. CONSTITUTION: The yttrium aluminate yellow phosphor represented by the formula: (Y1-a-bCeaTmb)3Al5O12 is produced by a process comprising the steps of: mixing yttrium aluminate with cerium oxide and thulium oxide; drying the mixture and pre-sintering at 1,200deg.C under the atmosphere; cooling the pre-sintered mixture and heat-treating at 1,650deg.C or higher; post-treating such as grinding. In the formula, 0.005=a=0.03 and 0=b=0.025.
