PURPOSE: A direction of arrival estimating apparatus using a front and a rear GS(Gram-Schmidt) filters in a mobile communication system is provided to obtain direction of arrival in a time varying channel environment. CONSTITUTION: A direction of arrival estimating apparatus for use in a mobile communication system comprises an adaptive rear GS filter(10), an adaptive front GS filter(20), a power calculator(30), a GS filter(40), a power normalizing filter(50), an inverse GS filter(60), a GS orthonormalizing unit(70), and a delay(80). The filters(10,20) obtain coefficients of the filters(10,20), respectively, by using an adaptive algorithm. The power calculator(30) calculates power from the output of the filter(20). The filter(40) performs GS filtering by using the coefficients from the filter(20) and the GS orthonormalized value retrieved from the delay(80). The filter(50) divides the output of the filter(40) by the output of the power calculator(30). The filter(60) inversely filters the power normalized value using the coefficients of the filter(20). The GS orthonormalizing unit(70) performs GS orthonormalization of the output of the filter(60).
