PURPOSE: A system and method for measuring residual stress and photoelastic effect of optical fiber are provided to minimize distortion of wave surface and polarization error of light passing the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION: A system includes a light source(10); a rotary light emanator(12) suppressing spatial coherence of light emitted from the light source to completely diffuse so as to provide uniform image temporally equalized; a collecting lens(14) aligning light passing the rotary light emanator to an optical fiber(F); a birefringent converting device(16) linearly controlling condition of polarization of light aligned by the collecting lens; a light condenser(18) condensing light passing the birefringent converting device to a point where the optical fiber is placed; a fixed polariscope(20) passing light emitted from the birefringent converting device through the optical fiber to convert polarized condition of light passing the optical fiber into distribution of density; an objective lens(24) generating expanded image of the optical fiber with distribution of density of light permeating the optical fiber; and a device(26) for measuring fluctuation of permeance given to the optical fiber according to positions.
