PURPOSE: An automatic display mode setting system and method is provided to automatically set an optimal display mode by selecting display mode data which is the most similar among plural display mode data supported by a video card. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises steps of reading resolution data and display data of a vertical frequency corresponding to an optimal mode from an EDID(Enhanced Display Information Data) stored at a monitor(S1), reading resolution data and display data of a vertical frequency corresponding to all the display modes supported by a video card(S3), comparing the data of the EDID with that of the video card(S5), checking if there exists the data of the EDID identical to one of the data of the video card(S7), in a case that there exists the data of the EDID identical to one of the data of the video card, storing the identical display mode data as an optimal mode(S15), in a case that there does not exist the data of the EDID identical to one of the data of the video card, selecting one display mode data of the video card which is the most similar to the display data of the EDID(S9), enabling the user to determine if the selected display data mode is set as an optimal mode(S13), storing the selected display data mode as an optimal mode if the user determines that the selected display data mode is set as an optimal mode(S15), and making the video card output image signals in an optimal mode(S11).
