The present invention provides antireflective multilayer coatings comprising thin film optical coatings and methods of making such coatings. The thin film optical coating includes sol-gel derived cerium oxide, silicon dioxide, and oxides of one or more transition metals selected from group IIIB to VIB of the periodic table that can provide a refractive index of about 1.90 or greater. The thin film may optionally contain colloidal gold particles. The present invention relates to a process for preparing a cerium oxide nanoparticle comprising impregnating a substrate with a solution comprising cerium nitrate hexahydrate, an alcohol and a chelating agent, removing the substrate from the solution and heat treating the coated substrate to form a metal oxide, Silicon dioxide, and a layer of an oxide of at least one transition metal selected from Group IIIB to Group VIB of the periodic table.
