A method and architecture for a system for maintaining cache line consistency in a memory sharing multiprocessor system includes a System Area Network (SAN) and a plurality of compute nodes connected to a SAN. Each of the compute nodes includes a local main memory, a local shared cache, and a local coherency controller, wherein compute nodes outside one compute node include an external shared cache, the coherency controller each corresponding to one of the external shared caches. Contains shadow directories. Each of the shadow directories contains state information of local main memory cached in external shared caches. Shadow directories contain only state information of local main memory cached in external shared caches.
