A method of detecting the presence of a structure inside an object using a gain medium that is strongly scattered and acts like a laser is disclosed. The disclosed search method comprises providing a multiphase gain medium in one surface area of an object, wherein the multiphase gain medium emits electromagnetic radiation at wavelengths within a wavelength band having a second wavelength different from the first wavelength. Reacting to electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength, irradiating the gain medium with a first pulse of radiation having a first wavelength, propagating the radiated radiation having the second wavelength to an object; Reflecting a portion of the propagated radiation back to the surface of the object in response to the radio wave radiation encountering a change in refractive index associated with the structure, and the reflected radiation entering the polyphase gain medium simultaneously with a second pulse. Enhancing radiation of the electromagnetic radiation to a wavelength belonging to the wavelength band having the second wavelength in response to; Retrieving radiation and correlating the retrieved enhanced radiation with the time between the appearance of the first and second pulses to determine at least one distance from the structure to the surface of the object.
