Broadband fixed wireless access (BFWA) base stations have a physical layer automatic repeat request mechanism. The base station has a transmitter. The transmitter includes a physical layer transmitter for receiving data. The received data is formatted into packets. Each packet has a specific encoding / data modulation. The specific encoding / data modulation uses a BFWA modulation scheme and forward error correction (FEC) coding. The physical layer transmitter retransmits the packets in response to transmitting the packets and not receiving a corresponding acknowledgment for the given packet. An adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) controller collects retransmission statistics and uses the collected statistics to adjust the particular encoding / data modulation.
