The installation for carburisation and quenching of a thin plate element (15) includes a number of carburisation chambers (2), a cooling chamber (1) and a supply unit (3) for delivery of a cooling gas into the cooling chamber. The carburisation chambers (2) are positioned around the cooling chamber (1) at approximately the same distance from the latter. The claimed method involves rapid transport of a thin plate element (15) from a carburisation chamber (2) into a cooling chamber (1) where it is quenched with a cooling gas.
