The trace elements contained in a sample (3) of polar ice are determined by a laser ablation process and assembly with a sample chamber (2). The evaporated trace elements are moved by a flow of a carrier gas (12) preferably argon as an inductively-coupled plasma to a mass spectrometer. The sample (3) is especially introduced to the sample chamber (2) in a frozen condition. During the evaporation process, the inner part (25) of the sample chamber (2) and the flow of carrier gas (12) are maintained at temperatures (T(K) preferably 30 degrees C below the sample (3) freezing point. The coolant fluid is preferably ethanol. The sample chamber (2,21,22) and sample holder (26) are made of Teflon (RTM).
