The lifting device esp. container spreader, has vertical brackets (61-64) with locking units (81-84) mounted inside so as to be displaced telescopically. The lower ends of the locking units are adapted to lock with receiving parts e.g. hollow bodies of locking mechanisms on the outer walls of the containers. Each locking unit contains a further extendable unit, which is also formed to lock in receiving parts.
