Characteristic measurement data vectors are detected for the adjusting mechanism and are monitored for a possible abnormal state. Measurement data is sent to an identification device that comprises a complete system model (M) with an actuating system model (M1) and a fault model (M2). The model is used to estimate at least one state vector (x) for determining an abnormal state in real time.
