The method involves setting the demand value for a spring-loaded pneumatic pressure regulator (5) in the combustion gas line (4) to the minimum bias pressure required to operate the burner (1) for a given gas-air mixture ratio for the highest quality gas, detecting the current gas quality, determining the bias pressure required to maintain the mixture ratio for the detected quality and increasing the bias pressure with a pneumatic pressure pulse.
