Controlling an exhaust gas feed device of an IC engine, especially a diesel engine, comprises mixing a part of an exhaust gas stream with an air-fuel mixture added to the IC engine at a changing exhaust gas backflow rate; determining the sulfur content of the exhaust gas; and controlling the backflow rate depending on the sulfur content of the exhaust gas or a parameter deviated from the sulfur content. An Independent claim is also included for an exhaust gas feed device of an IC engine (10), especially a diesel engine comprising a control device for controlling the exhaust gas backflow rate; and a measuring device (26) arranged in the exhaust gas tract (12) of the engine. Preferred Features: Particle emissions are calculated depending on the sulfur content of the exhaust gas and operating parameters of the engine, and the backflow rate is controlled depending on the particle emissions. The sulfur content of the exhaust gas is determined from a signal obtained from the measuring device. The sulfur component is SO2. The operating parameter of the engine is air-fuel ratio, volume or mass stream of a fuel supply, engine revolutions, engine load and/or vehicle speed.
