A method for the radical atom-transfer polymerization of vinyl monomers in aqueous solution, in which at least one component selected from monomer(s), initiator and/or metal/ligand catalyst is complexed with a cyclodextrin. A method for the production of polymers by radical atom-transfer polymerization (ATRP) in aqueous solution, in which at least one component selected from (A) radically polymerizable monomer(s) of formula (I), (II) and/or (III), (B) initiator and/or (C) metal/ligand catalyst is complexed with a cyclodextrin. R1, R3 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R2 = H, halogen or 1-4C alkyl in the o-, m- or p-position, COOM, SO3M or 1-4C alkoxy; M = H or alkali metal; R4 = 1-4C alkyl or the residue of a 2-18C monocarboxylic acid; X = CN, COOH, COOR5, CONR6R7 or COR8; R5 = 1-18C alkyl, optionally substituted with OH, OR5 or NR6R7; R6, R7 = H or 1-18C alkyl, or the two groups together may form a 5-12C cycloalkyl group; and R8 = 1-18C alkyl or 5-12C cycloalkyl.
