The device has at least one switchable semiconducting switch (T1,T2) per switch of the phase unit and at least one diode (D1,D2) per semiconducting switch in which a current passed by a semiconducting switch when the switch is switched off is commutated. The semiconducting switch(es) and the diode(s), between which the current commutates, are placed immediately adjacent to each other to ensure a minimal commutation distance.
