New high activity acid catalyst, for use e.g. in hydrocarbon isomerization, cracking or alkylation, comprising zirconium oxide carrier, sulfating component and zirconium compound binder

A novel acid catalyst (I) comprises: (a) a carrier consisting of at least one optionally hydrated zirconium oxide; (b) a sulfating component applied to the carrier; and (c) at least one further zirconium compound as binder. An Independent claim is included for the preparation of the acid catalyst (I), involving kneading a wet mixture of a hydroxide and/or hydrated oxide of zirconium and components (b) and (c), then shaping, drying and calcining the mixture.
