The arm rest (10) for a stacking chair has a connector (14) which fits into a recess in it and contains an L-shaped slot (22) though which a pin (30) mounted on the arm rest extends. A compression component (40) is mounted between the pin and a mounting (50) on the connector with a spring (46) between them. This allows the arm rest to be moved back for stacking and raised to the normal position for use, the spring being under higher tension in the stacking position.
