The invention relates to a method and device for producing treatment gas containing CO and H2 for the heat treatment of metallic material at high temperatures. A treatment gas is formed from a hydrocarbon (mixture) with oxygen and/or an gas mixture containing oxygen. According to the invention, the treatment gas is formed in at least two steps (B, 9), whereby the first step (B) comprises an exothermic reaction of a hydrocarbon(mixture) (4') with oxygen and/or a gas mixture containing oxygen (1), whereby carbon dioxide can be introduced therein. The second step (9) comprises an exothermic reaction of a hydrocarbon(mixture) (4'') with the gas mixture formed in the first step (B), resulting in the treatment gas. Preferably, the oxygen added to the exothermic reaction step (B) and/or the gas mixture (1) containing oxygen added to the exothermic reaction step (B) are heated (3) to a temperature of between 500 and 1 200 DEG C, preferably between 700 and 1 000 DEG C.
