A pump (P) on the top of an elbow bend (3) in the runoff (4) switches on during use to pass water out of the elbow fill, quite independent of the normal flushing system. The shape of the bow and/or jet layout (6) is such that the water flows over from the upper rim of the bowl in a downwards direction. In a shallow-bowl urinal the bowl surface (5) slopes down to the runout (7). Pump, jets (6) and bowl shape together give a flow vortex. The pump is switched on by hand or by proximity switch and is shut down by a delay element.
