Production of elastomer particles by emulsion polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, comprises using an emulsifier with a critical micelle concentration (cmc) of at least 10-3 mole/liter. Production of elastomer particles comprises: (a) emulsifying ethylenically unsaturated monomers, the homo- or copolymers of which have a glass transition temperature (Tg) below 0 deg C, in water under shearing action in the presence of an emulsifier with a cmc of at least 10-3 mole/liter and a water-soluble initiator; and (b) heating the emulsion to initiate polymerization, optionally with addition of further monomers for grafting.
