Device for determination of the level (F) of a liquid or bulk material (2) within a container (3) has a transmitter (5) for emission of electromagnetic waves or a particle beam in a narrow measurement region (8) on the surface of the material. A receiver (6) is set up to detect the measurement area (8) and uses an analysis unit (7) that determines the material level from one or more measurement area determinations. For solid bulk material a matrix of measurement points over the surface of the bulk material can be defined to accurately determine the volume of material within a container.
