Production of sintered workpieces (1), especially a stereolithographic process for use in an automated laser sintering machine, involves binding separate layers of liquid, pasty or granular material by irradiation, especially using a laser beam. Each layer comprises a core (2) and a coating (3), and irradiation is controlled to produce different properties in the two areas. The novelty is that the intensity of the beam is controlled to produced complete fusion of the material in the coating in at least its surface area.
