Oligonucleotide (ON) containing, or corresponding to: (a) any of 135 sequences (A) fully defined in the specification; or (b) a sequence that differs from (A) by a single base change, provided that this does not occur in a central 9 nucleotide (nt) region, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) oligonucleotides (ON') containing, or corresponding to: (a) any of 15 sequences (B) fully defined in the specification; or (b) sequences that differ from (B) by up to 2 nt changes, provided these are not in the specified central region; (2) polynucleotide construct (C1) containing at least one ON or ON'; (3) polynucleotide construct (C2) containing in two separate regions: (a) both partial sequences (AbI, AbII) present in any of 36 sequences fully defined in the specification; or (b) both helixI and helix II of any of 36 sequences fully defined in the specification; (4) polynucleotide construct (C3) that encodes ON or ON'; (5) cells containing ON, ON' or C1-C3; (6) pharmaceutical or diagnostic composition containing ON, ON', C1-C3, or the cells of (5); (7) identifying analgesics based on quantification of binding of labeled ON, ON' or C1-C3 to an RNA; and (8) diagnosing diseases associated with altered expression of genes for the vanilloid receptor family.
