The method involves automatically varying the intensity of the useful signal emitted by the signal source (15) depending on the fluctuation with time of the intensity of the noise signal in the environment around the signal source. The actual noise intensity is measured and the desired signal intensity set so the useful signal can be detected against the noise level.
