The sun shade assembly, with a smooth or folded blind (12), has a mechanism (10) to set the length of the deployed blind. The mechanism has a movement roller (14) which grips the blind by friction contact, to extend or retract it according to the direction of rotation, and hold it in place in the required setting. The movement roller is across the blind width, or a number of rollers are on a common shaft. At least one roller presses the blind against a smooth profile (16) to build up the required friction forces.
