Method for protecting metals against corrosion in water-guiding systems comprises exposing iron or steel to a combination of 1-hydoxypropan-1,3-diphosphonic acid (HPDP) or its salts and zinc chloride. An Independent claim is also included for a synergistic agent for inhibiting corrosion containing an effective quantity of 1-hydoxypropan-1,3-diphosphonic acid or its salts and zinc chloride. The two components are added to water in a formulation.
