Sensor element comprises: (1) first electrodes (8) subjected to the gas component to be analyzed; and (2) a reference electrode (7). Sensor element comprises: (1) first electrodes (8) subjected to the gas component to be analyzed; and (2) a reference electrode (7). The electrodes (7, 8) are electrically connected together using a first solid electrolyte (14). A first device is provided to apply an electrical voltage over the time intervals between the first electrodes and the reference electrode. The voltage can be adjusted. A second device is provided to measure the electrical current between the first electrodes and the further electrode. An Independent claim is also included for a process for determining the concentration of a component in a gas mixture, especially an I.C. engine exhaust gas, comprising using the sensor element.
