Chemically and/or thermally converting a component of a suspension comprises separating the component from the suspension and placing in the flow-through layer of a filter medium; placing the filter medium in a reaction zone with a vapor-forming treatment fluid; passing the treatment fluid through the filter medium from the upper side so that the treatment fluid partially condenses in the flow-through fluid and releases a heat of condensation; and adjusting the pressure and/or temperature in the reaction zone so that the component containing the heat of condensation is chemically and/or thermally converted. An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process. Preferred Features: The material composition of the treatment fluid can be adjusted. Before adding the treatment fluid, scrubbing fluid containing reagents and/or catalytically active substances is passed through the flow-through layer. The treatment fluid especially contains enzymes.
