The cylinder systems of the engine are divided into two groups, each with its own manifold (3,4). In each manifold a primary catalytic converter (5,6) is fitted before the manifolds join to connect to the main converter (7). When starting at least one cylinder in one group is run with a rich mixture ( lambda = 1.0) and in the other group with a lean mixture ( lambda 1.0).
