The surface to be decorated has a design formed by an ink jet printing head. With a single-stage process, the surface is sprayed with a primer before printing and/or the printed surface is covered by sprayed varnish. The primer and/or varnish are applied in a non-impact action by an ink jet or airbrush. The printing uses oil, ultra violet or solvent inks. The time interval between the application of the primer and the printing and/or between the printing and the varnish coating is 0-10 mins. and preferably 4 mins.
